This was the third annual Yorktown Christmas Market on Yorktown's historic main street. The event is sponsored in part by the York County Historical Museum and some of our members presented a living history display.
2008 Fort Pickett National Guard Open House
Fort Pickett held its first ever National Guard Day event at the beginning of October 2008, in conjunction with HRHR (Hampton Roads Historical Reenactments), a group to which several of VMPA's members also belong. VMPA members traveled to the event to set up vehicles and displays, and we had a good showing. This year's event was relatively small, since it was the first year it was held, but nonetheless successful. We're looking forward to seeing it grow in the years to come.
2008 Virginia War Museum Open House
The Virginia War Museum's open house event is an annual local event for most of VMPA's membership. It is part living history display, part vehicle show, part militaria auction, and part open house for the museum. This year, the weather held out well all weekend and we had a good showing, even though the weather right up to Friday of the event was less than great. VMPA had a number of great displays at the event.
2008 August Membership Meeting & Work Party
Every so often, VMPA members get together for a membership meeting to discuss upcoming events and general bits related to the organization, as well as to work on club members' vehicle restoration projects. This time, work was performed on vehicles owned by club member Marc Meisner.
2008 Dragon Expo
The Dragon Expo is an annual scale modeling and action figure convention which was held at the Virginia Beach Convention Center this year. VMPA members Monty Winget, Adrian Winget, and Pete Thompson brought a number of vehicles to the event, as well as two anti-tank guns, and members of VMPA-sponsored re-enactment units Fox Company and FJR 6 also attended the event.
2008 National D-Day Memorial Open House
Members of VMPA-sponsored re-enactment unit FJR 6 attended the Open House event held at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia. Their display, showing weapons and information about the German paratroops' role in the Normandy campaign, drew crowd interested throughout the day, and they had a chance to talk about history with visitors and veterans alike.
2008 Yorktown Fourth of July Parade
VMPA participated in the annual Yorktown Fourth of July Parade, which assembled just on the outskirts of town near the Yorktown Battlefield, and ran past the Victory Monument, and through the heart of old Yorktown and alongside the Yorktown Waterfront. Fortunately, the weather held out until after the parade, saver for a few sprinkles, and we had a great time.
2008 Military Aviation Museum
We participated in the Memorial Day event at the Military Aviation Museum, a privately owned museum and airfield in Virginia Beach, VA.
2008 Hunt for Hampton History
This was the second year the Hunt for Hampton History event was held, and its theme this year was World War II. The event was held inside the Hampton Roads Convention Center. Displays included local Hampton Roads historical museums and societies, as well as re-enactors portraying Axis and Allied troops, and the home front during the war. The event was a great success.
